Helen, thanks so much for your input. I agree with you that accuracy enhances the performer's pleasure. Having the ability to accept our performances without regard to being right or wrong is such a critical skill for performers. A strong obsessive-compulsive drive can serve us in practice and in preparation for performance, but you're right—it's hard to tame or turn off once we're performing. Although external feedback can help give us a reality check of sorts, cultivating healthy, positive self-talk can take time and much practice. Recognizing what and which situations "pushes our buttons" and then, being prepared to reframe our thinking and act differently is key to moving forward and growing. Thanks again for your thoughts!

I appreciate the categories also. This provides a checklist approach to development which gives structure to the work we do. Vocal interpretation brings me pleasure. Accuracy enhances this pleasure. I am willing to forgive inaccuracy in myself but its hard! An Obsessive cumpulsive drive is hard to tame. :/ Being in a studio environment allows necessary external feedback to help keep "self-talk" in check.

Thanks Simin for your comment. It's always good to hear from you. If we want to improve as performers—you're right—it is necessary for us to look for "weakness" and seek the guidance or help we need to grow and learn. In addition to "recognizing our weakness," I hope, though, that many musicians (including you) will be able to recognize the strengths they have and celebrate these. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there is an issue you want or need more information on.

Thanks for your response,

I told you before about my-self that I study psychology for two years to solve my problem. I sent you an abstract about my research and my questioner and you gave me your opinion. the title of my research was:
*The effective factors on a successful performance*

I overcome performance obstacles by repetition the logical thinking and by watching performers in a different situation and their reaction to other people. and also by speaking with other students about the similar experience in performance condition. I just repeat and repeat all you teach in your article because I exactly experienced what you say about wrong belief and all things you talk about. It was my occupation so I tried to solve it, and I was successful in one of my important entrance exam and if you remember I sent you an email and I reported it with a lot of pleasure!
I am familiar with you more than one years ,I am following your article and they are so helpful.

Dear Simin,

Feeling fearful—especially when it negatively affects our performances—is not only disappointing and tiring, but it takes all the joy out of our performing as well. I am interested to hear how you were able to successfully "overcome your performance obstacles" and what has changed in the meantime. Remember, that some of the obstacles we experience such as anxiety, fear, need to perform perfectly, worrying about what others are thinking are obstacles that are based on limiting beliefs that didn't pop up overnight and will take consistent, continuous effort to overcome. Work on building effective mental performance strategies—reminding yourself of the reasons you can strongly believe in yourself and your abilities, practice focusing on your process, practice turning off your critical voice, and practice trusting your preparation by letting go of the need to consciously control being correct—on a daily basis and see if you start to feel improvement in your performing "muscles." Keep in touch!

Dear Simin,

Thank you for writing. I have been thinking of you. It is gratifying to hear that the things we discuss on the website and in the monthly emails is of some help to you.

When we focus on results or performance outcomes it is easy to start doubting our preparation, our practice, and our skills. Nothing takes the place of great preparation, but making sure our focus is on what will helps us best, is the next best thing! It is very common for performers to keep their eyes and focus on the outcome of a performance or exam, but doing so certainly does not help us in any way. In fact, focusing on the outcome makes us much more nervous.

Be sure to PRACTICE performing. That is, simulate the exam conditions as you prepare. Perform the same repertoire at the same time of day in front of those who may make you feel nervous as you will be feeling at the exam. Practicing performing will start to boost your confidence in a way that will help you trust your process so you can keep your focus on it!

Keep me posted, Diana

Hi Kerstin,

Thanks so much for your comment. For performers, concentrating on and keeping our focus on the process is of utmost importance. Actually, you know as well as I that you don't have to be a performer to know that focusing on things outside of our control is a recipe for fear and disappointment. I would love to hear your thoughts on how you apply this with your own clients. All my best at this holiday season, Diana
